catamaran boat

A catamaran boat is a type of boat that consists of two hulls joined by a frame. A catamaran boat can either be sailed or powered by motor power. The name catamaran comes from the Tamil language, in which the work kattumaram means, %uFFFDlogs bound together%uFFFD. What an aptly named boat!

The catamaran boat has been redesigned over the years for both leisure and sport sailing, although they have been used in Polynesia for many, many years to settle the world%uFFFDs most far-flung islands.  Due to the unique design and style of this type of boat, it has met with scepticism over the years from sailors accustomed to more traditional designs.

The catamaran boat and multihulls in general are normally faster than normal hull boats for four main reasons.  On a catamaran each hull is thinner in a cross section than those of monohull. They are lighter due to no keel counterweight, they have a wider beam which makes them more stable, and with the greater stability, you are going to stay upright more easily in a gust of wind.  Wow, what a fun boat! Have fun surfing the net to find just the right catamaran for your needs.
