Are you considering membership in the New York yacht club?  A book could be written about this legendary yachting club called the New York yacht club.   This club of distinction was started in July 1844, when John Cox Stevens invited eight friends to his yacht Gimcrack, anchored in the New York harbour. When they met they resolved to form this club named at the time %uFFFDStevens Commodore%uFFFD.

The theme of the New York yacht club in those days was to race sailing yachts.  With the formation of the club, the first clubhouse was built in 1845 on land donated by Commodore Stevens, in Hoboken, New Jersey overlooking the Hudson River.

The New York yacht club officially opened on July 15, 1846 in a gothic revival building. Following the next day was a club regatta billed as a %uFFFDtrial of speed%uFFFD.  This became the %uFFFDAnnual Regatta%uFFFD.  With the exception of a few major events such as wars and even the assassination of New York senator, Robert Kennedy, this event, known as the annual regatta, will have run 151 times as of summer 2005.
